Team USA’s Kim awarded churros, ice cream, sandwich after gold medal

Feb. 13 (UPI) — Chloe Kim was ‘hangry’ before winning a gold medal Tuesday for Team USA. She used churros to calm her nerves, but requested ice cream before her final run.

She rallied to serve up one of the best treats of the Winter Games for her home country. Kim, 17, won first place in the women’s Olympic halfpipe final. She already secured the top spot on the podium before her final shredding session, but proceeded to best her top score during a victory lap. With the win, Kim became the youngest woman to win an Olympic snowboarding gold medal.

She registered a score of 98.25.

“Trying to think of a caption is actually impossible but all I can say is thank you to everyone who’s been there for me since the beginning,” Kim posted on Instagram Tuesday. “I am so grateful to be surrounded by people I love with all my heart and so thankful for my family and their never ending love and support. Glad I could bring home the Gold!!”

Kim shed some tears on the podium after winning the medal.

“I hate crying but I’ll give myself a pass for this one,” Kim tweeted. “Thank you everyone for the love! Stoked to bring home the gold.”

The California-based snowboarder, born to South Korean immigrants, was all about snacking leading up to her performance. On Saturday, she tweeted about eating churros and how it helped calm her nerves.

“Oh and I also had 2 churros today and they were pretty bomb so if you ever get nervous go eat a churro,” she tweeted.

Her next tweet sounded like a subliminal request for a frozen treat.

“Could be down for some ice cream rn [right now],” she tweeted.

Her most interesting food-related tweet came during competition, between her first and second run in the halfpipe.

“Wish I finished my breakfast sandwich but my stubborn self decided not to and now I’m getting hangry,” Kim wrote Tuesday during the halfpipe final.

The NBC broadcast crew had a chef make sandwiches, ice cream and churros for Kim after her performance.

She went for the churros first.
